French luxury group Kering said on Saturday that it had appointed Sabato Di Sarno, one of Valentino’s chief fashion designers, as creative director of Gucci, its most important brand.

According to Reuters, Di Sarno will take over Gucci’s task of reviving the brand, which accounted for two-thirds of Kering’s profits in 2021, but began to lose momentum compared to its impressive success between 2015 and 2019.

Di Sarno, 39, started his career at Prada in 2005 before moving to Dolce & Gabbana, then joined Valentino in 2009 where he held several positions before being appointed director of men’s and women’s fashion groups to work closely with chief designer Pierpaolo Piccholi.

“I am proud to join a house with such an exceptional history and heritage, and which over the years has shown hospitality and pride in the values I believe in… I am moved and excited to bring my creative vision to this brand,” Di Sarno said in a statement issued by Kering.

Di Sarno is scheduled to present his first collection of Gucci fashion during Milan Fashion Week for Women in September 2023.
