SABIC, PepsiCo sign MoU to promote recycling in Saudi Arabia

The Saudi Basic Industries Corporation “SABIC” and “PepsiCo” signed a memorandum of understanding on October 26, 2022 AD at the SABIC Center for the Development of Plastic Applications “SPADC” in Riyadh, to cooperate in establishing a special system for the use of recycled plastic products in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Within the framework of this MoU, SABIC and PepsiCo will seek to support efforts to achieve the objectives of the circular economy in the Kingdom, by addressing the challenges related to creating new solutions that include recycled materials that can be used in various beverage and food packaging applications, in addition to filling the gap of the existing capabilities and infrastructure related to recycling operations, as well as promoting awareness about the role of recycled plastics.

The scope of the memorandum includes working jointly; to create favorable conditions for the success of circular economy efforts in line with the Kingdom’s environmental goals and the goals of the Green Saudi Initiative.

SABIC and PepsiCo worked closely with government agencies in order to achieve a circular value chain, and help these agencies achieve the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.

Sami bin Mohammed Al-Osaimi, Executive Vice President for Petrochemicals in SABIC, said that the memorandum of understanding with PepsiCo enhances the empowerment of sustainability initiatives and the circular economy, based on the (Trucircle™) package from SABIC. ‎

This partnership is fully in line with SABIC’s commitment to developing local content; To develop the market in the Kingdom, and act as a leading company at the local level; To build a recycling system in the country.

For his part, CEO of PepsiCo in Africa, the Middle East and South Asia Eugene Willemsen said: “The cooperation with SABIC is an important step in the framework of benefiting from the technologies and expertise of the two companies; To address the future of the circular ecosystem in the Kingdom.”

He added, “In pursuit of the sustainability goals included in the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, this memorandum was developed in line with PepsiCo’s constant keenness to enhance cooperation in order to find effective solutions to climate change issues.”

It is noteworthy that the SABIC Center for Plastic Applications Development “SPADC”, in which the memorandum of understanding was signed, is one of the tributaries of the “SABIC” technology system, which includes 20 technical centers around the world.

SPADEC focuses on developing solutions for sustainable applications and products, and creating cost-effective processes that enable them to meet the needs of customers and the value chain.
