British Prime Minister Liz Truss announced Thursday her resignation from the post, just six weeks after her appointment, and confirmed the election of her successor by next week. For his part, the leader of the British Labor opposition, Keir Starmer, called for a general election “now” after Truss announced her resignation.

British Prime Minister Liz Truss submitted her resignation Thursday, under pressure from her economic program that shocked markets and divided the Conservative Party, just six weeks after her appointment.

“In the current situation, I cannot complete the task that the Conservative Party elected me to do,” Terrace said outside the Cabinet Office at 10 Downing Street. So I spoke to His Majesty to inform him of my resignation from the leadership of the Conservative Party.”

She added that the process of selecting a successor for MPs “will be completed within the next week.”
