China Discusses Easing AI Chip Export Restrictions with US

China intends to have the United States ease export restrictions on core AI chips as part of a trade agreement ahead of a potential summit between Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, the Financial Times reported on Sunday.

The newspaper reported that Chinese officials told experts in Washington that Beijing wants the Trump administration to ease export restrictions on high-bandwidth memory chips.

HBM chips, which help perform data-intensive AI tasks quickly, are closely watched by investors because they are used alongside AI graphics processors, particularly those from Nvidia.

The Financial Times added that China is concerned that US restrictions on HPM are hampering the ability of Chinese companies like Huawei to develop their own AI chips.
