Toyota Sales Reach 5.54 Million Vehicles in First Half

Toyota Motor Corp. announced Wednesday that its group companies sold a record 5.54 million vehicles worldwide in the first half of 2025, outperforming German rival Volkswagen AG and likely retaining its top spot in global sales for the sixth consecutive year.

Japanese news agency Kyodo reported that global sales rose 7.4% year-on-year in the January-June period, including sales from its small car unit Daihatsu Motor and its truck-making subsidiary Hino Motors Ltd., setting a new group sales record for the first time in four years.

Toyota had posted record global sales of 5.47 million units in the first half of 2021, but its sales have since been negatively impacted by a global semiconductor shortage and production suspensions due to a series of certification scandals. Volkswagen sold 4.41 million vehicles in the same period, a 1.3% increase from the previous year, according to the German company.

In the first half, Toyota Group’s domestic sales rose 27.4% to 1.05 million vehicles, recovering from a sharp decline in 2024 following the discovery of tampering with safety test data.

Overseas sales also rose 3.6% to a record 4.50 million units, driven by strong demand for hybrid vehicles worldwide.
