Tesla Tunnels: A Project Adopted by Elon Musk Sparks Partisan Controversy

A project announced by officials in Nashville, the capital of the US state of Tennessee, mid-week, regarding a massive public transportation partnership with Elon Musk’s Boring Company, aimed at alleviating the city’s severe traffic congestion for travelers heading to the airport, has sparked controversy. Musk has previously made similar promises in several other US cities, without achieving many positive results, according to CNN. In an announcement in Nashville, Governor Bill Lee confirmed that the planned tunnel will be known as the “Music City Loop,” and that the project is 100% privately funded, with no cost to Tennessee taxpayers. He did not specify the funders or the expected cost.

Nashville Democratic lawmakers demanded clarification on the plans, while state Republican leaders seized the opportunity to partner with Musk.

A state committee is holding an emergency meeting and public hearing Thursday morning to discuss a proposed “no cost/mutual benefit” lease agreement to help the company get the tunnels up and running.
