Samsung Maintains Lead in Global Smartphone Market

Data released Tuesday showed that Samsung Electronics maintained its lead in the global smartphone market in the second quarter of the year, buoyed by sales of its competitively priced Galaxy A models.

According to market tracking firm Canalys, Samsung captured 19% of the global smartphone market in terms of shipments. According to Yonhap News Agency, iPhone maker Apple ranked second with 16%, followed by Chinese company Xiaomi with 15%.

Samsung was the only smartphone maker to achieve annual growth of 3%, while Apple’s sales declined 2% and Xiaomi’s remained unchanged.

The global smartphone market recorded its first decline in six quarters, contracting 1% amid a slower-than-expected recovery in consumer demand and economic uncertainty. However, Canalys reported that the US government’s tariff policies, coupled with good inventory levels of new devices, may impact supply and demand in the market, paving the way for growth in the second half of the year.
