The Nikkei business daily revealed on Sunday that Japanese automaker Nissan Motor Co. is in talks with Taiwanese company Foxconn regarding cooperation in the production of electric vehicles, a move that could save its Oppama plant in Japan from closure.
According to the newspaper, Nissan’s plant in Oppama, Yokosuka, which employs approximately 3,900 employees, was included in the struggling Japanese automaker’s potential restructuring plans. However, converting the plant’s idled production lines to manufacture Foxconn-branded electric vehicles could help preserve existing jobs and the associated supply chain.
In May, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan’s junior partner, signed a memorandum of understanding with a Foxconn affiliate to supply it with an electric vehicle model, enhancing the prospects of expanding cooperation between the Japanese automaker and the Taiwanese tech giant.
