Japanese stocks close lower as markets assess US tariffs

Japanese indices declined at the end of trading on Thursday, as markets assessed the repercussions of new US tariffs imposed on several countries.

The Tokyo Stock Exchange reported that Japan’s Nikkei 225 index closed down 0.44%, or 174.92 points, at 39,646.36. The broader Topix index closed down 0.56%, or 15.82 points, at 2,812.34.

In terms of exchange rates, the US currency fell slightly against its Japanese counterpart by about 0.11% to 146.18 yen in morning trading, while the yield on 10-year Japanese government bonds fell by about one basis point to 1.492%.
