Japanese stocks closed lower at the close of trading on Thursday, as a stronger yen led to widespread selling in export-oriented shares amid pressure from the auto sector.
The Nikkei index fell 0.65%, or 248.10 points, to close at 38,173.09, while the broader Topix index fell 0.21%, or 5.75 points, to close at 2,782.97.
