The Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority (GCCIA) has officially announced its membership in the United Nations Global Energy Strategy (UNEZA). This strategic move aligns with the Authority’s long-term vision of building an interconnected, resilient, and low-carbon electricity grid in the Gulf region.
Eng. Ahmed Al Ibrahim, CEO of the GCCIA, emphasized that the Authority’s membership in the UNEZA reflects its unwavering commitment to environmental protection and sustainable energy development. He added that the Authority’s membership in UNEZA demonstrates its commitment to its strategic objectives of supporting environmental sustainability and developing energy infrastructure in the Gulf. Through this membership, the Authority strengthens its role in facilitating the transition to a low-carbon economy through regional cooperation, innovation, and advanced technologies.
He added that this partnership opens the way for the Authority to collaborate with global energy sector leaders, exchange best practices, and implement effective solutions that enhance the efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of energy systems. It also strengthens its position as a key contributor to global efforts to combat climate change and achieve carbon neutrality goals. The UNEZA Alliance was established during COP28, under the auspices of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and in collaboration with the UN High-Level Envoys for Climate Change. This global alliance comprises leading utility and energy companies and aims to accelerate the energy transition by tripling energy efficiency and tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030, with a collective goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The alliance comprises more than 50 members, with a combined market value of nearly US$1 trillion, serving more than 340 million consumers worldwide. UNEZA focuses on key areas including reducing risks in supply chains, supporting regulatory and policy frameworks, and mobilizing financing for electricity grid infrastructure modernization and the integration of renewable energy sources.
