Twelve US states have asked a federal court to reverse the sweeping tariffs on imports imposed by US President Donald Trump, arguing that he has overstepped his authority, subjected US trade policy to his whims, and wreaked economic chaos.
The states are filing a challenge against the tariffs Trump imposed last month on most countries around the world in an attempt to address America’s massive and long-standing trade deficit.
The states are also challenging the president’s previous tariffs on imports from Canada, China, and Mexico to combat the flow of illegal immigrants and synthetic opioids across the US border, according to the Associated Press.
A three-judge panel at the US Court of International Trade in New York heard arguments in the lawsuit filed by the states.
