US President Donald Trump said he did not target a stock market sell-off following the severe crisis that hit global markets.
When asked about the markets, the US president said that sometimes “you have to take the medicine,” referring to the negative consequences that may be tolerated to achieve the desired results.
In remarks to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said, “If we don’t fix the trade deficit with China, we won’t make a deal,” noting that he had spoken with leaders from Europe and Asia about the tariffs imposed by his administration.
US stock markets suffered heavy losses amounting to billions of dollars at the end of trading this week.
