US President Donald Trump announced today that his country will impose tariffs on all goods imported into the United States, in an escalating move aimed at addressing what he described as an uneven trade opportunity.
At a press conference titled “Making America Rich Again” at the White House, Trump revealed tariffs on most countries around the world, the lowest of which was a 10% tax on imports from the United Kingdom and most Arab countries.
Tariffs varied on other countries with significant economic dealings with the United States, including Colombia, which had the largest share of tariffs at 49%, and Vietnam at 46%, exceeding China, whose goods were subject to tariffs of 34%.
The US President also announced a 25% tariff on cars manufactured outside the United States, effective midnight local time.
Trump stated that cars from Japan and South Korea are sold freely in the US market, while American cars do not have a similar opportunity in those markets. He added, “A 25% customs duty will be imposed on all foreign cars,” stressing that the United States has been subjected to economic pressure and unfair customs duties for many years.
