Nikkei closes down 2.7% under pressure from US tariffs

The benchmark Nikkei 225 index closed down 2.77%, or 989.94 points, at 34,735.93, while the broader Topix index closed down 3.08%, or 81.68 points, at 2,568.61.

This comes after US President Donald Trump announced global trade tariffs of at least 10% on all goods imported into the United States, with much higher rates for some close trading partners, in a sweeping move that could reshape global trade and the US economy.
