French President Emmanuel Macron said today that the US president’s decision this week to suspend the tariffs he imposed on a large number of countries for 90 days provides only a “fragile pause.”
“The partial suspension of US tariffs for 90 days sends a signal and leaves the door open to talks. But this pause is fragile,” Macron wrote on Twitter.
“Fragile, because the 25% tariffs on steel, aluminum, and cars, and 10% on all other products, remain in place. They represent €52 billion ($58.8 billion) for the European Union! Fragile, because this 90-day pause means 90 days of uncertainty for all our businesses, on both sides of the Atlantic and beyond.”
Macron reiterated that France and the EU would present a united front in negotiations aimed at reaching an agreement and removing the US tariffs.
