Chinese President Xi Jinping urged the European Union to cooperate with Beijing in resisting unilateral bullying, triggered by US President Donald Trump’s imposition of tariffs that have caused widespread chaos in global markets.
In talks with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, state media quoted Xi as saying, “China and the European Union must cooperate on this issue.”
Xi said, “China and Europe must fulfill their international responsibilities and jointly resist unilateral bullying.”
He emphasized that this will not only “protect their legitimate rights and interests but also international fairness and justice.”
After stock markets collapsed and bond markets began to decline, Trump was the first to backtrack this week on his efforts to restructure the post-World War II global trading system, freezing several tariffs for 90 days.
