The Chinese Ministry of Commerce announced that 84% tariffs on US goods took effect on Thursday.
The Office of the Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council of China announced yesterday that tariffs on US goods would increase from 34% to 84%, effective April 10.
Yesterday, US President Donald Trump raised tariffs on Chinese goods to 125%, a move he described as a response to what he considered Beijing’s reckless response in the context of the ongoing trade escalation between the two countries.
A White House official explained that “China decided to respond recklessly, necessitating the imposition of the highest tariff rate ever.” Following China’s initial retaliatory tariffs announced on April 2, Trump announced an additional 50% increase, bringing the total tariffs on Chinese goods to 104%.
