European Union Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic said on Thursday that the bloc may postpone until mid-April the imposition of the first set of countermeasures against the United States regarding tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on steel and aluminum imports.

The commissioner proposed reimposing tariffs on €4.5 billion ($4.9 billion) of US products starting April 1, followed by €18 billion of US goods on April 13.

“We are now considering aligning the timing of the two sets of EU countermeasures so that we can consult with member states on both lists simultaneously. This will give us additional time to negotiate with our US partners,” Sefcovic said during a European Parliament session.
