Italian Economy Minister: Customs Tariffs Are Economic Weapons That Influence International Alliances

Giancarlo Giorgetti, Italy’s Economy Minister, believes that customs duties have become economic weapons aimed at influencing international alliances.

In an interview published by the Italian news agency ANSA, he added, “In light of the aggressive trade and financial wars we are witnessing, it has become clear that customs duties are being used as economic tools that influence global financial, commercial, and political alliances and dynamics.” Giorgetti added that customs duties are no longer limited to protecting the national economy and regulating trade relations between countries, but have become a strategic tool that directly influences international policies.

He continued, “If customs duties are implemented strategically, they could alter the course of global trade, influence political alliances, and even reshape geopolitical balances.” These statements come at a time of increasing economic tensions on the global scene, as customs duties have become part of the economic tools used by major countries in the context of trade wars to pressure their competitors and achieve their economic and political interests.
