Germany demands decisive response to US auto tariffs

German Economy Minister Robert Habeck called on the European Union to respond decisively to the auto tariffs announced by the United States.

In a post today on the social media platform X, Habeck said, “It is now important for the European Union to provide a decisive response to the tariffs. It must be clear that we will not give in to the United States.” He affirmed the European Commission’s support for continuing negotiations with the United States to prevent a spiral of tariffs.

He explained that tariffs ultimately harm the United States, the European Union, and global trade as a whole.

Habeck warned that the United States’ announcement of a 25% tariff on imports of cars and auto parts “is bad news for German automakers, the German economy, the European Union, and also for the United States.”

He added that the tariffs interfere with global supply chains and will also increase the cost of American cars, noting that prices in the United States will continue to rise.
