Trump tightens restrictions on Chinese investments in strategic sectors in America

US President Donald Trump signed a memorandum aimed at curbing Chinese investments in strategic American sectors, including technology and vital infrastructure.

The White House said on its website that the memorandum aims to “promote foreign investment while protecting the national security interests of the United States, particularly against threats posed by foreign adversaries such as China.”

He added that the new US administration intends to call on the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) to “restrict Chinese investments in strategic American sectors such as technology, critical infrastructure, health, agriculture, energy, raw materials, and others,” noting that “President Trump is committed to his promise to prevent foreign adversaries from exploiting the United States.”

The United States accuses China of what it describes as “some foreign adversaries,” including China, of investing in American companies in order to “obtain the latest technology and intellectual property.”

This memorandum comes amid trade tensions between the two largest economies in the world.

Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump imposed 10% tariffs, in addition to those already in effect, on products imported from China, but he later said in statements that reaching a trade agreement with Beijing was “possible.”
