US President Donald Trump threatened on Friday to impose tariffs on Japanese goods if the trade deficit between the two countries is not settled, during his reception of Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba in Washington.
Trump said he wanted to achieve a “balance” in the trade balance between the two countries, and threatened to impose tariffs if progress was not made in this regard.
China had announced that it would impose retaliatory tariffs on a group of American products, in response to similar measures.
The United States also decided to suspend proposed tariffs on Canadian imports for 30 days, hours after Trump announced the suspension of expected tariffs on goods coming from Mexico.
