The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, has approved the launch of the Saudi riyal symbol, a move aimed at reinforcing the currency’s identity, the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) said on Thursday.
SAMA Governor Ayman M. Al-Sayari expressed his deep appreciation to King Salman and Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman for their support, emphasising that the decision strengthens Saudi Arabia’s local, regional, and international financial identity.
“The launch of the Saudi riyal symbol highlights the growing significance of our national currency in the global financial system,” Al-Sayari said, adding that it also fosters pride in national identity and cultural heritage.
The new symbol, designed to the highest technical standards, is derived from Arabic calligraphy and carries the name “Riyal.” It will be gradually integrated into financial and commercial transactions in coordination with relevant authorities.
Al-Sayari acknowledged the collaborative efforts that contributed to the initiative, extending his appreciation to the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Media, and the Saudi Standards, Metrology, and Quality Organization.
“As Saudi Arabia advances its Vision 2030 agenda, this step underscores the Kingdom’s financial system and its growing role on the regional and global stage,” he added.
