The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia celebrates Founding Day on February 22, marking the founding of the first Saudi state in 1727 by Imam Mohammed bin Saud.
This national occasion embodies pride in the deep roots and historical legacy of Saudi Arabia, highlighting the enduring connection between its citizens and leaders since the founding of the first Saudi state three centuries ago, with Diriyah as its capital. That first state was fully sovereign, with Islam as its religion and the Quran and Sunnah as its constitution—a tradition that continues today.
The people of Saudi Arabia are proud of this historical legacy, established by Imam Mohammed bin Saud. His state shaped the social, political, economic, and cultural landscape of the Arabian Peninsula.
From the first Saudi state, through the second Saudi state founded by Imam Turki bin Abdullah, to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia unified by King Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman, the nation has grown and developed. Successive kings have contributed to this progress, culminating in the prosperous era of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and HRH Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister.
The Founding Day anniversary offers a valuable opportunity to reflect on the past three centuries of Saudi statehood. It highlights the enduring legacy of the state, its impact across the Arabian Peninsula, and the deliberate process of its formation.
From its inception, the Saudi state prioritized establishing order, ensuring societal security, serving the two holy mosques, and improving the lives of its people, all while facing numerous challenges. The strength of national cohesion has been instrumental in the state’s continuity since 1727, ensuring its continued success through even the most difficult periods.
To mark this national occasion, cities across the Kingdom are hosting a variety of cultural and artistic events. These celebrations of creativity, love, and loyalty reflect the rich history passed down by the nation’s leaders and depict the nation’s journey through periods of prosperity and hardship, highlighting its steadfastness, pride, and preservation of authentic Arab identity. The events also reinforce the concept of national unity throughout the various stages of the Saudi state.
The strong bond between the people and the leadership has been a constant, continuing into the prosperous era of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and HRH the Crown Prince, during which the Kingdom is experiencing remarkable development and renaissance under Vision 2030.
