Indonesia confirmed today that its accession to the BRICS economic group is a “strategic step” to improve cooperation with other developing countries based on the “principle of equality, mutual respect and sustainable development.”
“This achievement demonstrates Indonesia’s growing role in global issues and its commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation to create a more inclusive and just global architecture,” the Indonesian Foreign Ministry said in a statement commenting on Jakarta’s accession to the group.
“As a country with a diversified and constantly growing economy, Indonesia is committed to actively contributing to the BRICS agenda, including enhancing economic resilience, technological cooperation, sustainable development and addressing global challenges such as climate change, food security and public health,” it added.
It is noteworthy that BRICS is an international group established in 2006 and initially included Russia, Brazil, India and China, then South Africa joined in 2011, and at the beginning of 2024, five new countries joined its membership: the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Iran and Ethiopia.
