Amazon has applied for approval from the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to launch drone delivery services from its warehouse in Darlington, County Durham, as part of its plan to use drones to deliver packages to homes.
Amazon plans to launch the drone delivery service, called Prime Air, with same-day deliveries set to begin once it has received the necessary approvals from the local council and the Civil Aviation Authority.
The service will be available to customers living within 7.5 miles of the warehouse, with areas not suitable for drones excluded, according to The Guardian.
Before signing up for the service, an Amazon representative will inspect customers’ homes to ensure there is adequate space for the drone to land. After placing the order, the customer places a lightweight landing platform in their yard or garden, where the drone can identify it and safely drop the package from above. The drones will be battery-powered and can carry packages weighing up to 2.3kg.
