Russian gas company Gazprom has announced it will halt gas supplies to Moldova from January 1 due to a debt dispute during the tiny country’s energy security emergency.
The move comes as several Eastern European countries plan to halt Russian gas supplies, with Kiev preparing to block Russian gas flows through its territory within days.
Earlier this month, Moldova declared a 60-day state of emergency before Russian gas supplies were halted.
Gazprom said in a statement that it would “impose restrictions on natural gas supplies to the Republic of Moldova, to zero cubic metres per day, as of 05:00 GMT on January 1, 2025,” accusing Chisinau of failing to pay its debts.
It said it took the step “against the backdrop of the Moldovan side’s refusal to regularise the debt.”
Gazprom accused Chisinau of failing to fulfil its contractual obligations, and said it “reserves the right” to take further action, including terminating the gas supply contract with Moldova.
