Boeing plans to lay off more than 2,500 workers in Washington, Oregon, South Carolina and Missouri, as part of the debt-laden planemaker’s plan to cut 17,000 jobs, or 10% of its global workforce.
The company sent 2,200 layoff notices to workers in Washington and 220 more in South Carolina, the two states where Boeing builds commercial passenger jets, a document showed.
The aerospace giant began telling affected workers on Wednesday that they will remain on Boeing’s payroll until Jan. 17, complying with federal requirements that employees be given at least 60 days’ notice before their employment is terminated.
Another round of cuts is expected in December. Boeing could also use workforce attrition, selective hiring and the sale of subsidiaries to reduce its workforce.
