The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, inaugurated the Riyadh Metro Project, which is the backbone of the “Public Transport Network in Riyadh City” and one of the elements of the transportation system in the city.

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques watched an introductory film about the project, which represents one of the major projects witnessed by the Kingdom during this prosperous era, and is distinguished by its high design and technical specifications, and consists of a network that includes 6 train tracks with a length of 176 kilometers, and 85 stations, including 4 main stations.

On this occasion, Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince, Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Royal Commission for Riyadh City, expressed his great thanks and gratitude to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques for his generous support and sponsorship of the “Public Transport Project in Riyadh City, with its two components, the train and buses,” since it was an idea until it was embodied on the ground, according to his wise directives to complete the project according to the highest international specifications, and in the best possible way, to provide its services to the residents and visitors of Riyadh City.

The Crown Prince said: “The Riyadh Public Transport Project, with its two components – the train and the buses – is the fruit of the planting of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and based on his insightful vision, when he was the Chairman of the High Commission for the Development of Riyadh.

It is worth noting that the “Riyadh Public Transport Project” was launched from various studies prepared by (the High Commission for the Development of Riyadh – currently the Royal Commission for Riyadh City) on the current situation of the city and its current and future needs in the public transport sector, and identifying the best solutions and options for establishing a sustainable public transport system that is compatible with the reality of the city and its urban, population and traffic characteristics.

These studies concluded with the development of (the comprehensive plan for public transport in the city of Riyadh), which included the establishment of a train transport network and a parallel bus transport network, working to contain the existing and expected transportation requirements in the city. This plan was crowned by the issuance of the Cabinet’s decision to “approve the implementation of (the Riyadh Public Transport Project – the train and buses)”.

The Authority launched a major process to qualify global coalitions to compete to implement the project, and the issuance of the royal approval to award contracts to implement the “Riyadh Metro” project to (three coalitions) that include more than 19 major international companies from 13 countries.

With the support of His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince, Prime Minister and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Royal Commission for Riyadh City, the Royal Commission for Riyadh City – praise be to God – completed this project, which is considered one of the largest public transport projects in the world, as it covers the entire area of ​​Riyadh in one phase, in addition to its precise nature, high design and technical specifications, and its harmony with the social, environmental and urban characteristics of Riyadh and its residents, in addition to the project’s contributions to the city of Riyadh that go beyond providing public transport services and raising the quality of life in it in general, in line with the goals of “Vision 2030”.

Three tracks in different colors

The Royal Commission for Riyadh City announced the dates for the successive operation of the six Riyadh train tracks, starting with the operation of the three tracks (the first track “blue”: Al-Olaya Street – Al-Bathaa axis) and (the fourth track “yellow”: King Khalid International Airport Road axis) and (the sixth track “purple”: Abdulrahman bin Auf Road axis – Sheikh Hassan bin Hussein Road) on December 1, 2024.

This will be followed two weeks later on Sunday, December 15, 2024 by the operation of the two tracks (the second track “red”: King Abdullah Road) and (the fifth track “green”: King Abdulaziz Road), then the operation of (the third track “orange”: Madinah Road axis) will be completed three weeks after that on Sunday, Rajab 5, 1446 AH (January 5, 2025 AD), thus completing all six tracks of the Riyadh train network, with a total length of 176 kilometers, and all the network stations, which number 85 stations, including 4 main stations.

Saleh Al-Jasser, Minister of Transport and Logistics, said that the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques’ inauguration of the Riyadh Train Network today confirms his insightful and early vision for this historic project when he was Chairman of the High Commission for the Development of Riyadh, towards building the largest and most modern advanced transportation project in the world, to be implemented simultaneously according to the highest technical specifications.

The Minister added that the launch of the Riyadh Train represents the beginning of a new era for transportation in the Kingdom, and a milestone in the comprehensive development process, to establish the capital, Riyadh, as one of the most prominent advanced global cities in various types of modern transportation; with great support and empowerment from the Crown Prince.

He explained that this huge national project will constitute a major shift in developing the infrastructure for transportation, supporting developmental, economic and social movement, and facilitating rapid access between destinations; With an initial capacity of one million passengers per day, which contributes to improving beneficiary satisfaction, enhancing the quality of life, and achieving the goals of the National Strategy for Transport and Logistics Services in accordance with Vision 2030.
