General Motors said it will lay off 1,695 workers at its Fairfax, Kansas, assembly plant.

A spokesman for the automaker, confirming the layoffs first reported by Automotive News, said the first round of layoffs will begin on Nov. 18, affecting 686 full-time workers temporarily and terminating 250 temporary employees.

The first two rounds of layoffs will begin on Nov. 18 and will include the temporary layoff of 686 full-time workers and the termination of 250 temporary employees, Automotive News reported Saturday, citing a filing the company filed with the state of Kansas.

The report added that the third round of layoffs will begin on Jan. 12, with 759 full-time workers temporarily laid off. Earlier in May 2024, GM said it would stop production of the Cadillac XT4 after January 2025 in Kansas, laying off production employees until production resumes in late 2025 for both the XT4 and Bolt on the same assembly line. The company also said in August it would lay off more than 1,000 permanent employees in its software and services units worldwide.
