The monthly report of the US Treasury Department revealed that Saudi Arabia increased its holdings of US bonds and treasury bills by the end of last June to $140.3 billion, an increase of $4 billion compared to May 2024, an increase of 2.9%, and an annual increase of $32.2 billion over its level a year ago, an increase of 29.8%. With the recorded increase in the Kingdom’s holdings of US bonds and treasury bills during last June, it has returned to rise for the second month in a row after rising by about $900 million last May, after ending the year 2023 at $132 billion, following a series of increases that extended during the second half of last year, specifically since July 2023.
Despite the Kingdom’s increase in its holdings of US bonds and treasury bills last March, it came in the same 17th place among the largest countries investing in US bonds and treasury bills, while no Arab country appeared on the list of the 20 countries most invested in US bonds and treasury bills.
The Kingdom’s holdings of US bonds and treasury bills are distributed between $109.2 billion in long-term holdings, representing 78%, and about $31.1 billion in short-term treasury bills and bonds, representing 22%.
The world’s holdings of US bonds and treasury bills increased by $78.3 billion during the month of June, rising to about $8.210 trillion compared to about $8.132 trillion in May 2024. Japan leads investors in US bonds and treasury bills with ($1.118 trillion), followed by China with ($780.2 billion), then the United Kingdom ($741.5 billion), then Luxembourg ($384.2 billion), then Canada ($374.8 billion), then the Cayman Islands ($319.4 billion), followed by Belgium ($318 billion), followed by Ireland ($308 billion), then France ($307.2 billion), then Switzerland ($287.1 billion), then Taiwan ($265.9 billion), followed by India ($241.9 billion), then Brazil ($227 billion), then Hong Kong ($220.6 billion).
