The US Federal Aviation Administration said on Monday that it had requested inspections of 2,600 Boeing 737 planes because passenger oxygen masks could malfunction during an emergency.
The Federal Aviation Administration said it requested inspections of the 737 MAX and Next Generation aircraft after multiple reports of the passenger service module’s oxygen generators shifting out of position, a problem that could result in the inability to provide supplemental oxygen to passengers during a depressurization event.
The Aviation Administration said that on June 17, Boeing issued a bulletin to airlines calling for inspections.
That declaration, which authorities filed late on Sunday and still requires the approval of a federal judge, would make the plane maker guilty of a criminal charge.
The Department of Justice said in the file it submitted to a federal court in Texas, which contains an overview of an agreement in principle in this regard, that Boeing will also pay a criminal fine of $ 243.6 million.
The charge relates to two crashes of 737 MAX planes in Indonesia and Ethiopia within 5 months in 2018 and 2019, killing 346 people and prompting the families of the victims to demand that Boeing be prosecuted.
