Hyundai ranks world’s third in car sales

Data on Sunday showed that Hyundai Motor Group ranked third in terms of car sales in the world for the second year in a row.

According to data released by each company, Hyundai Motor, Kia and Genesis, subsidiaries of Hyundai Motor Group, sold a total of 7,304,000 units in the world last year, ranking third after Toyota Group and Volkswagen Group, which sold 11,233,000 units and 9,240,000 units, respectively.

In 2022, Hyundai Motor Group rose to third place for the first time and maintained its ranking for the second year in a row, as reported by the Korean Yonhap Agency.

The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance and the American General Motors Group came in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

The gap between Hyundai Motor Group and the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance widened from 688,000 units in 2022, to 905,000 units last year.

Hyundai Motor Group’s global sales have risen steadily over the past 20 years.

The group continued its rise in the rankings after occupying tenth place in 2000, entering the list of the “big five groups” for the first time in 2010, surpassing the American company Ford.

However, the group has remained in fifth place since that time due to fierce competition between automakers. In 2020, its ranking rose for the first time to fourth place. But it fell to fifth place again the following year, then jumped to third place in 2022.

In 2022, Hyundai Motor Group was the only group to achieve a positive growth of 2.7% in sales among the six major car groups, but Toyota and Volkswagen achieved growth of 7.2% and 11.8%, respectively, in sales last year, outperforming the group. Hyundai, which recorded 6.7%.
