Toyota Motor said on Tuesday that it sold a record 11.2 million cars in 2023, making it the best-selling car company in the world for the fourth year in a row.
The Japanese automaker announced a 7.2% jump in the group’s global sales last year, including sales of truck unit Hino Motors and small car manufacturer Daihatsu, supported by record overseas sales of 8.9 million vehicles.
Volkswagen Group, the second-placed German competitor, announced earlier this month a 12% increase in deliveries last year to 9.2 million cars, representing a recovery after the Corona pandemic as supply chain bottlenecks eased.
Sales of original Toyota vehicles alone, which include those bearing the same name and the Lexus brand, reached a record high of 10.3 million cars in 2023.
Hybrid cars that run on gasoline and electricity make up about a third of those cars. Battery-powered electric cars accounted for less than one percent.
