The global cost of living survey conducted by the Economist Research Unit revealed the most expensive cities in the world, with Singapore and Zurich topping the list.‎

For the ninth time in the past 11 years, Singapore holds the title of the most expensive city in the world, sharing the position with Zurich this year, which rose from sixth place in 2022.

The survey, which was conducted from August 14 to September 11, according to the Times of India website, included 173 cities and compared the prices of more than 400 items and services. Singapore’s ranking is affected by rising costs of groceries, alcohol, clothing, and private car ownership, while Zurich’s rise is due to rising prices for household items and leisure activities.

The survey indicates a trend in cities witnessing rising prices due to inflation, with a 7.4% increase on an annual basis in the prices of more than 200 goods and services, although it was lower than the previous year.

New York City, which shared first place with Singapore last year, is now tied for third place with Geneva, Switzerland.‎

Other US cities in the top ten include San Francisco and Los Angeles. Despite the low inflation in Asia compared to other regions, Hong Kong ranked fifth

Western Europe stands out for inflation in groceries and clothing, with Zurich, Geneva, Paris and Copenhagen on the list. While Tel Aviv also appeared on the list, with Copenhagen occupying eighth place

This is a list of the most expensive cities in the world to live in:

‎1. Singapore: Singapore tops the list due to continuing rises in the costs of groceries, alcohol, clothing and private car ownership, making it the most expensive city in the world for the ninth time in 11 years.

‎2. Zurich, Switzerland: Zurich jumped from sixth place in 2022 to second place this year, driven by rising prices for household items and leisure activities, which strengthened Switzerland’s reputation for high costs of living.

  1. New York City: Although this city previously shared first place with Singapore, it is still among the most expensive cities in the world due to its continuous rise in prices for various goods and services, which contributed to its tie for third place.
  2. Geneva, Switzerland: Geneva, which ranks third, is distinguished by its large expenses in grocery and clothing stores, which reflects the broader trend in Switzerland of cities with high costs of living.
  3. Hong Kong: Hong Kong ranks fifth globally, highlighting its expensive living conditions, despite lower inflation rates in Asia compared to other regions.
  4. Los Angeles: Los Angeles is also among the most expensive cities in the world, which reflects the high cost of living, and also because it is one of the major urban centers in the United States.
  5. Paris: Paris, one of the four European cities in the top ten, is primarily due to inflated grocery and clothing prices, making it an expensive global city.
  6. Copenhagen, Denmark: Copenhagen ranks eighth, which shows Denmark’s presence on the list due to inflation in groceries and clothing.
  7. Tel Aviv: Tel Aviv, which tied with Copenhagen for eighth place, is considered one of the most expensive places to live in the world, even though the survey was conducted before the war between Israel and Hamas.

‎10. San Francisco: San Francisco earned a place on the list of the top 10 cities due to its high cost of living, keeping it in line with other major American cities on the list.‎
