The administration of US President Joe Biden intends to increase customs duties on some Chinese goods, including electric cars

According to the Wall Street Journal, the US government is currently discussing the duties imposed during the era of former US President Donald Trump on Chinese goods worth close to $300 billion, in order to end a long review of customs duties early next year.

The US government is also considering reducing customs duties on some Chinese consumer products that officials believe are not of strategic importance, in addition to potential increases on clean energy products.

Lawmakers had previously revealed that American auto companies export Chinese-made cars to America, which means that the current customs duties on imports are insufficient.

Beijing’s automobile exports have increased in recent years, driven by surplus production and slowdown in domestic demand, according to data from the International Trade Bank of China, and are expected to rise by 25% next year.

Chinese cars now face a 25% tax, which was imposed during Trump’s presidency and extended under Biden.
