The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has launched the latest generation of Wi-Fi technologies WiFi-6e, featuring a data transfer speed exceeding 5 times the current generation of Wi-Fi technologies, in addition to doubling capabilities in accommodating the number of users, making the kingdom the 1st in the world, in the total frequency spectrum available for Wi-Fi technology, as it conducted the 1st experience of LEO Satellite communication, at across the Middle East and North Africa.
Such a success in providing innovative and effective solutions to cover remote areas, is added to its intention to hold a new auction for the frequencies available for the fifth-generation networks and mobile communications.
The move has taken on the side-lines of the work of the International Technical Conference LEAP22, hosting in the Kingdom, in Riyadh on 1-3 February.
WiFi-6e technology will provide high connection speeds of up to 2.4 Gbit/s, and will enable the Kingdom to take the lead, in adopting modern digital technologies, such as virtual reality, augmented reality and the Internet of things, thus enhancing the returns of the digital economy, Governor of the Communications and Information Technology Commission, Dr. Muhammad Al-Tamimi explained.
It supports investment in emerging wireless technologies, as the contribution of Wi-Fi technologies to the Kingdom’s GDP is expected to more than quadruple, rising from $4.7 billion in 2021 to more than $18 billion by 2030, he elaborated.
The Commission seeks to adopt future networks based on overlapping terrestrial and satellite technologies and components, such as “LEO Satellite” technology, he pointed out, saying that is in order to ensure the spread of reliable coverage for users of various communications technologies throughout the Kingdom and enhance the Kingdom’s benefit from the space economy and its integration with the digital economy. The size of the global space market, in 2020 has amounted to $341 billion, and it is expected to grow to $576 billion by 2030,
Al-Tamimi stressed, announcing that the authority will hold a new auction of frequencies, during the 1st half of this year, which will make the Kingdom the 1st, globally, in the total frequency spectrum available for the fifth generation networks and mobile communications, which will double the contribution of the fifth generation technology to the GDP by more than 11 times, as it is expected to rise from $1.4 billion in 2021 to more than $15 billion by 2030.
