Currently, fishermen on the coasts of the Eastern Province are embarking on fishing for shrimps, as its fishing season was started, in early August 2021, and will continue until the end of January.
The current season, which lasted for nearly 6-month is witnessing good productivity with affordable prices for consumers, in various local markets. Through the permits issued by the branch of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, in the Eastern region, for boats located along the coast of the Arabian Gulf for the current shrimp fishing season, as many as 1,189 permits were issued for workers on 272 launches category, and 1,557 permits for workers on cruisers category.
Traders and sellers of fish and shrimp in the eastern region stressed that the shrimp fishing season represents an essential opportunity to support the commercial and economic movement in the region, and make profits, which enhances the purchasing power of consumers, with the presence of full competition milieu and an abundance of supply.
They praised the precautionary measures taken by the branch of the ministry, to support workers in the fishing profession, by providing them with loans and subsidies.
In addition to establishing model fishing harbors in various lots giving to the coasts of the region, and contributing to preserving economic resources, and working on their sustainability for future generations, stressing the significance of localizing this profession, as that would contribute to the participation of the private sector in the national economy.
Meanwhile, investors in the eastern fish market began storing large quantities of shrimp, coinciding with the end of the advent of the fishing season, in order to take advantage of the opportunity to buy, at currently convenient prices and to sell them, later in the off season, garnering much more profit margins, due to the supply shortcoming against rising or at least stable demand.
Quantities of shrimp caught during the last season 2020 amounted to 6430 tons, the branch of the ministry reported, indicating that the fishing proceeds for this season achieved a great economic returns, for the people of the region, turning to an incentive for the development and Saudization of the profession, as the price of one manna (a locally recognized measurement weighing16 kilos) stood at SR250 for small shrimp, SR350 for medium shrimp, SR500 for large shrimp, and SR750 for the largest sized- shrimp, better known, locally, as the Jumbo.
