The Global demand for electricity over the next few years is set to slow, after hitting a record level, in 2021, Paris-based International Energy Agency (IAE) projected.
However, the demand will still lead to higher carbon emissions, without rapid gains in low-carbon supply and energy efficiency, it added.
In its annual report on the electricity sector, the agency stated that global demand for electricity rose by 6%, or 1,500 tw/h, in 2021, the largest increase since the recovery from the global fiscal crisis in 2010, and the largest overall increase ever.
China accounted for about half of the increase, in terms of the global demand for electricity, last year, up 10 percent.
However, global electricity the agency expects the demand to slow, in the next few years, as energy efficiency measures would take effect, while the economic recovery would slow.
Another expect is that the demand would rise by 2.7% on average through 2024, although the effects of the pandemic and high energy prices, remain unclear.
On the other hand, the Carbon dioxide emissions in the energy sector jumped 7% to a record level, in 2021, after falling in the previous two years.
