Saudi Arabia Wins IMO Council Membership

Kingdom of Saudi Arabia obtained a seat on the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for the Years 2023-2022, following a vote for vote of the member states, during the elections that took place, in London.

On this occasion, the President of the Public Transport Authority, Dr. Rumaih Al-Rumaih commented that such a move comes to support the wise leadership guidance for development of the marine transport system, through multiple initiatives announced by HRH Crown to protect the marine environment and secure its preservation.

This membership, he added, will also provide an opportunity for the Kingdom of to continue to support the efforts and initiatives of IMO to contribute to the development of international laws and regulations that would develop trade and development.

The Kingdom, via its active role in the organization, will achieve the goals of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, consolidating the Kingdom’s position, in this respect, as a regional-cum-world hub, putting it in the ranks of the advanced countries, in the maritime transport and logistics.

The national strategy for transport and logistics services adopt many ambitious initiatives and targets, which will contribute to Saudi outreach to world marine advanced status by 2030,  handling as much as 41 million Snow container and facilitate procedures for glades and cargo handling, to be terminated in less than two hours, and the development of marine tourism to serve 19 million passengers through the ships cruise and other coastal transportation beneficiaries, he stated, adding that benefiting of the strategic location of the Kingdom, as a confluence of East and West points.

About 13% of world trade is passing through the Red Sea, and that 70% of energy supplies transported to the world through the Arabian Gulf, thus enhancing the position of the Saudi commercial maritime fleet, considered the first regionally and the twenty-first in the world in terms of tonnage.
