Total Foreign Investment more than Doubled, in the Kingdom

Overall foreign investments, in Saudi Arabia, have more than doubled, from the beginning of 2015 to the conclusion of the first quarter of 2021, as per the various newspaper’s research.

The total foreign investments, in Saudi Arabia, climbed by 104.4%, or SR1.087 trillion to SR 2.218 trillion, at the end of the 1Q, 2021, according to the Saudi Central Bank figures.

At the end of the first quarter of 2021, the value of foreign investments reached a new high.

Mainly, there are three types of foreign investments.

Breaking them down, the portfolio investments related to capital market investments have ranked first; the second are the direct investments in the economy, defined as companies or establishments investing in projects, outside the mother country’s borders; and the third are other investments, which are loans, deposits and other investments, not included in the first and second types.

Portfolio investments: The value of portfolio investments, at the end of the first quarter of this year was SR700.76 billion, up from SR62.69 billion, at the end of the fourth quarter of 2014, indicating a substantial increase of more than tenfold.

Thus value of portfolio investments was at its greatest level in history, at the conclusion of the first quarter of this year.

By the end of the first quarter of this year, portfolio investments accounted for about 32.9% of foreign investments, in Saudi Arabia.

Direct investment within the economy: At the end of the first quarter of this year, the value of foreign direct investments, in the economy reached its highest historical levels, amounting to about SR913.72 billion up from SR809.66 billion, at the end of the fourth quarter of 2014, a 12.9% increase, or SR104.06 billion.

At the end of the first quarter of this year, foreign direct investment in the economy accounted for 42.9% foreign investment.

Other investments: Other investments were valued at approximately SR513.69 billion, at the end of the first quarter of this year, up from SR169.08 billion, at the end of the fourth quarter of last year, representing a 203.8 percent increase of approximately SR344.61 billion.

Also, by the end of the first quarter of this year, other investments accounted for about 24.1% of foreign investments.
