Jeddah Islamic Seaport Ranks 37th Worldwide

The Kingdom raised its global ranking, in terms of seaports network, as it jumped to 16th place, internationally, in terms of the volume of handling quantities, according to the annual report (Lloyd’s List) for the Year 2021, which measures the annual production capacity of container handling.

Jeddah Islamic Port made a big leap in its global ranking, from 42nd to 37, globally, by registering as much as 4,767,000 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs), in 2020 compared to 4,433,991 containers in 2019, achieving, an increase of 6.8%, exceeding many regional and international ports.

According to the report; three Saudi ports were among the top 100 ports in the world, whereas Rabigh-based King Abdullah Port ranked 84th, Dammam-based King Abdulaziz Port ranked 93rd, in the world.

With contracts extending for 30 years, an investment value of nearly SR9 billion, and an increase in the capacity of container terminals by more than 70%, reaching more than 13 million containers..

It also comes as a result of effective strategic partnerships with major international shipping lines, through the addition of four transcontinental shipping lines, during the past year, which contributed to strengthening the resilience of linking the Kingdom’s ports with the ports of the East and West, and increasing the quantities of handling, in Saudi ports.

Qualitative and significant progress in the performance of the seaport network, embody the move towards an aggressive transformation, to make the Kingdom a global logistical center, in light of the great attention paid by the wise leadership, to develop the transport and logistics industry, in the Kingdom, and maximizing its role, in the national economy.

The port sector is moving at a steady and accelerating pace, towards achieving the objectives of the national strategy for transport and logistics, in accordance with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.

Plans to develop transshipment operations and services, in the Saudi ports, facilitate and re-engineer their procedures, contributed to enhancing the Kingdom’s competitiveness, in the field of maritime trade and logistics services, by achieving a rise in transshipment containers, during the past year by 8.80%, and raising the capacity by 4,184,501 TEUs.

In order to enhance the role of the ports sector, in supporting the national economy and the gross domestic product, in general, as it is the primary driving force of exports and imports, as well.

It is noteworthy that the Kingdom enjoys a wide network of seaports, along the coasts of the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf; providing it with the largest port network, in the Middle East, and to be significantly important evidence of the regional and international weight, the Saudi ports entertain.
