Informed sources said that the American electric car manufacturer Tesla is preparing to open its first showrooms in India next month, officially launching its operations in the world’s third-largest car market, as the company led by Elon Musk tries to revive its sales amid declining sales in both China and Europe.
Bloomberg News quoted the sources as saying that the first batch of the American giant’s cars arrived in India, the rear-wheel-drive Model Y, shipped from the company’s factory in China. The Model Y is the world’s best-selling electric car.
Tesla is scheduled to open its first showroom in Mumbai in the middle of next month, followed by another in New Delhi, according to the sources. The company has also imported components for its ultra-fast charging stations, car accessories, merchandise, and spare parts from the United States, China, and the Netherlands, according to documents reviewed by Bloomberg. This move marks the end of Tesla’s years-long journey to enter the Indian market, a market Musk had long eyed but had held back due to disagreements over tariffs and local manufacturing.
