Japan’s Nikkei index rose today, boosted by optimism about progress in tariff talks and a weaker yen, marking its longest winning streak in nearly two years.
The Nikkei rose 1.04% to close at 36,830.69, its seventh straight session higher, its longest winning streak since August 2023. For the week, the index advanced 2%, marking its third straight weekly gain, according to Reuters.
The broader Topix index rose 0.31% to 2,678.78 during the day.
“The tariff negotiations between Japan and the US appear to be making progress, which is in line with expectations but has become a positive signal,” said Shuichi Arisawa, general manager of investment research at Iwai Cosmo Securities.
He added, “Moreover, news of the China-US negotiations led to a rise in US stock futures, which boosted the Nikkei index.”
