The British government has published a 400-page list of US goods that it may include in any potential retaliation against US President Donald Trump’s tariffs on British imports.
The British government clarified in a statement on Thursday that not all of the products on the list will be subject to any future tariffs, noting that it has adopted a calm approach to Trump’s 10% tariffs, the lowest of those imposed on dozens of other countries, rather than following the European Union and other economies in immediately threatening to retaliate with their own measures.
The list includes 8,000 products published by the government that could be subject to any future counter-tariffs, representing approximately 27% of UK imports of US products. The list will be subject to consultations with businesses for four weeks.
The indicative list includes binoculars and car parts, as well as food products, including meat and fish. British Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds announced that the United Kingdom remains committed to reaching an agreement with the United States to mitigate the impact of the new US tariffs, stressing that London does not intend to take immediate retaliatory measures. US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday the imposition of comprehensive tariffs on US imports from various countries around the world, with the aim of supporting the US manufacturing sector. The tariffs on China amounted to 34%, while imports from the European Union were subject to 20% tariffs, in addition to tariffs of varying rates on a number of countries, and a minimum tariff of 10% on US imports from all countries.
