European stocks fall on Trump tariffs

European markets fell sharply on Monday after US President Donald Trump imposed trade tariffs on several countries and threatened to impose them on the European Union and the United Kingdom.

The pan-European STOXX 600 index fell 1.4% after the opening bell, with all sectors in negative territory, and the UK’s FTSE 100 index fell 1.24% to 8,566.83 points.

The German DAX index fell 1.86% to 21,326.80 points, while the French CAC 40 index fell 1.82% to 7,805.75 points.

The STOXX 600 auto index fell more than 4%, while the technology, industrials and mining indexes fell more than 2% each. The German DAX index fell more than 1.7% in early trading.
