Google pays $29.2 million to use Canadian media content

Google announced that it has paid $69.2 million to Canadian media outlets to use its content, as part of an agreement with the government that accuses it of anti-competitive practices in the online advertising market.

Last November, the Canadian Competition Bureau launched proceedings against Google, considering that the giant group, the largest provider of online advertising technology in Canada, abused its dominant position by adopting “conduct aimed at ensuring the preservation and enhancement of its commercial power.”

The money was paid to the Canadian Press Group, a non-profit organization created specifically to manage the distribution of these amounts, according to a Google spokesperson.

The spokesperson indicated that the digital giant intends to continue to fulfill its obligations under this agreement, which stipulates a new payment at the end of 2025.
