US concerns over Nvidia Chips getting to China

The US Department of Commerce has asked Nvidia to look into how the company’s products have gotten into China over the past year.

Five different people involved in smuggling Nvidia chips have reportedly said they have so far avoided detection during recent inspections by Super Micro.

“We insist that our customers and partners strictly adhere to all export control restrictions,” an Nvidia spokesperson said in a statement, adding that any unauthorized diversion of previously owned products, including any resale on the gray market, would be a burden to our business, not a benefit. According to CNN, the report said that some customers have duplicated the serial numbers of servers containing Nvidia chips they purchased from Super Micro and linked them to other servers they could access. In some cases, the smugglers have even changed the serial numbers in the servers’ operating system.
