NEOM today announced the appointment of leading global partners to deliver the master plan, designs and engineering for Phase 1 of The Line.

Delogan Maysel Architects, Gensler and Mott MacDonald will work alongside The Line’s design, development and project delivery teams to provide consultancy on planning, urban design and infrastructure design for Phase 1 of The Line.

The partners intend to leverage their extensive global expertise to deliver the design details for Phase 1 of the city, which is one of the most complex and ambitious engineering projects in the world. All the teams of architects and designers collaborating in this partnership form an advanced design system with advanced methodologies, contributing to achieving the urban development goals of “The Line” city, and planning and designing the neighborhoods is scheduled to begin in early 2025.

“As the construction and development of “The Line” continues, we have formed these partnerships with leading global entities that combine design and urban engineering expertise to deliver the first phase of the city in line with NEOM’s vision and global ambitions. Through this collaboration, we will demonstrate how innovation can change current concepts of designing and building cities in an unprecedented way,” said Dennis Hickey, Chief Development Officer at “The Line”.

Delogan Maisel Architecture will serve as the project’s urban designer, designing the details of the master plan for the first phase of “The Line”, and introducing completely new concepts for urban planning and development in an unconventional way through the adoption of innovative vertical design. Delogan Maisel will also support NEOM’s goals in maintaining its own vision when appointing the architects who will be tasked with designing the neighborhoods in the next phase. To achieve this mission, Delugan Maisel will work with a team of experts specializing in a wide range of fields, including local climate, ecology, mobility and logistics solutions, and sustainability.

Gensler, the global design firm, will lead the city’s design and city planning processes, a key role given the project’s scale, scope, and unprecedented complexity. The firm will provide oversight, guidance, and governance services across a range of key areas, including planning regulatory policies, methodology, land use, and design compliance, as well as the design of the city’s core infrastructure assets and facilities, such as transportation hubs and other public facilities.

Mott MacDonald, as the project’s infrastructure engineering engineer, will manage, coordinate, and oversee the city’s primary utility systems, vertical and horizontal facilities, within the first phase of the city. Through this vital role, the firm is committed to ensuring that all The Line facilities are constructed, built, and operated efficiently and sustainably. The current development work at The Line is focused on completing the initial phases, which include infrastructure and preparatory works.

The project is witnessing the pouring of more than 120 foundations per week, which will soon constitute the largest foundation pouring operation of its kind ever.

The Line city is designed to address the challenges of urban life facing the world, and will provide a sustainable urban environment that is in harmony with the surrounding nature. The city will be completely free of streets and cars, combining the vitality of cities with the tranquility of green spaces and easy access to nature.
